While these women enjoyed each other on September 13, 2011, politicians a block away in the North Carolina General Assembly were hoping to permanently deny their equal rights by approving Senate Bill 514 authorizing a state-wide referendum on a proposed constitional amendment.
The amendment reads, in part: "Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State."

Equality NC organized this massive rally against SB-514 and leads in opposition to the amendment.
Thousands from the LGBT, straight and business communities (i.e. our community) turned out on this day to join in the opposition.
Martin Eakes, a long time advocate for economic and social justice, is CEO of Self Help, Inc. which serves the financial needs of many under-privileged citizens in North Carolina.
He is also CEO of the Center for Responsible Lending which has led the fight in NC and in Washington against lending practices that have preyed upon low-income citizens and landed the country in its current economic troubles.
